Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Search Engine Marketing, or SEM is a two-pronged methodology of generating traffic through the search engines.
The first prong is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is the process of improving a blog or website's ability to rank naturally in the search engines. Aside from the onpage optimization which needs be completed on the blog or website, many offpage measures are also taken, such as link-building. Over time, a webmaster or blog owner should see their search engine rankings improve, resulting in higher volumes of targeted traffic.
The downside to SEO is the time it takes to realize results. Generally, it takes 9-12 months for a website or blog to achieve first page rankings. However, once rankings are achieved, SEO can prove to be a highly profitable, low-cost traffic solution.
The second prong to Search Engine Marketing is Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing. I am sure that you have conducted a search on a search engine, and have seen results on the top and side of the page entitled, "Sponsered Links". These are individual or companies who pay the search engine a fee for every visitor who clicks on their link, hence Pay Per Click.
Pay Per Click is a very common way to promote products. One of the biggest advantages is that you can have your website placed on the first page of the search engines for a specific keyword or phrase within hours, if not minutes with PPC.
The downside of PPC is that it can be very competitive, and quite expensive. Nonetheless, you can track which keywords are converting the most sales, and delete the keywords which are not converting in order to bring optimum efficiency to your PPC campaign.
